Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of United Nations (“UN”) Advocacy Director.
Description: The United Nations Advocacy Director is the principal spokesperson and advocate for Human Rights Watch at the UN and on UN-related issues in New York. S/he is responsible for working with HRW’s programmatic staff to develop and implement advocacy strategies on the full range of countries and issues addressed by HRW. HRW’s UN work focuses on the UN Security Council, as well as the Secretariat and UN agencies, and involves regular meetings with UN officials and diplomats from member states. In addition, the UN Advocacy Director engages frequently with the UN press corps, and with the media more broadly on UN-related issues. 
The UN Advocacy Director is based in New York, although periodic travel to Geneva and other locations is required. The UN Advocacy Director is a member of HRW’s Advocacy department and reports to the Global Advocacy Director. The UN Advocacy Director works closely with the Geneva Advocacy Director, HRW’s principal advocate liaising with the Geneva-based UN institutions. 
Qualifications: Applicants should possess at least 5 to 10 years of international advocacy experience. Substantial knowledge of the United Nations, including an understanding of its principal institutions and inter-governmental bodies, is required. Direct experience working with or at the United Nations is strongly desired. Candidates must have significant human rights experience and expertise and demonstrated commitment to human rights. In addition, the successful applicant must be an effective public speaker and possess excellent writing and editing skills in English: fluency in one or more additional UN language(s) is advantageous. The ideal candidate will be collegial and have good judgment and excellent analytical and strategic-thinking capabilities; the ability to work quickly and effectively under pressure; the capacity to pay close attention to detail while working in a fast-paced environment and juggling multiple tasks; strong organization and coordination skills; and the ability to work effectively independently, as part of a team, and in partnership with other organizations.
