Human Rights Clinic Seeks Fellow

The Walter Leitner International Human Rights Clinic is part of the Leitner Center for International Law and Justice at Fordham Law School. The Clinic aims to train a new generation of human rights lawyers and
contribute to inspiring, results-oriented, practical human rights work throughout the world. The Clinic partners with NGOs and foreign law schools on human rights projects ranging from legislative reform, legal and policy analysis, fact-finding and report writing, human rights training and capacity-building, and public interest litigation.
Fieldwork abroad is a component of a number of projects each semester.


Students enrolled in the Clinic also participate in a seminar course that provides training in human rights advocacy skills and encourages critical reflection regarding the theory and practice of human rights.

In the past three years the Clinic has worked on projects focusing on HIV/AIDS and prisoners rights in Malawi; sex workers rights in India; female genital mutilation and child maintenance in Sierra Leone; constitutional reform and reproductive rights in Ethiopia; land rights and returnee rights in Cambodia; access to justice in Liberia; fair trade in Lebanon; and Native American women’s reproductive rights in South Dakota. Future projects will continue to engage human rights issues in the Clinic’s focus countries of Cambodia, Ethiopia, India,
Lebanon, Liberia, Malawi, Sierra Leone, and the United States. During the 2010 – 2011 term, the Clinic will also focus on projects in Latin America.


The Leitner Clinic seeks to hire a full-time human rights clinical teaching fellow for the 2010 – 2011 academic year. The Human Rights Clinical Teaching Fellow willdevelop Clinic projects in partnership with human rights organizations; supervisestudent work on Clinic projects, including fieldwork abroad; and co-teach the companion human rights advocacy course. The Leitner Clinic faculty director will supervise the fellow. 


Qualifications:

Candidate must have: 

1) J.D. degree or equivalent (no 2010 J.D. Candidates, please); 

2) strong academic background in international human rights law; 

3) strong experience in international human rights advocacy as exhibited by post-graduate human rights work;

3) experience and/or interest in teaching or supervising law students. 

Although all applications are welcome, applicants with background or interest in Latin America and Spanish language ability are strongly encouraged to apply.


Salary:

The salary is $55,000 and includes health benefits. The fellowship term will begin in August 2010.
